Complex software doesn't have to feel complex.

Gridline is a one-person UX studio in Utrecht. I design the interfaces enterprises run on: data-heavy dashboards, operator workflows, design systems. My background is aviation and healthcare software, where a confusing interface gets people hurt.

Recent work: United Airlines, IMO Health, Flymachine, DriveCentric.

What I Do

The screens teams defer. That's most of what I do.

Complex platforms and dashboards

Scheduling, permissions, audit trails, alarm states, twenty-column tables. I make dense data legible for the people who work in it eight hours a day. At United that meant tools coordinating emergency response across a global airline. See the ERP work.

Design systems

Component libraries and documentation engineers actually adopt. I built a company-wide system at IMO Health for clinical products, and audited a vendor build against United's design system, documenting 40+ violations with fixes. See the audit.

Research where the work happens

I interview the people who do the job, in the place they do it. Planners in hangars. Coordinators mid-shift. Research that changes the roadmap, not research that decorates the deck. See the field study.

Bryan Engle

About

Gridline is one person. That's the point.

I'm Bryan. The person you email is the person who does the work. No juniors, no handoffs, no account managers.

Eight-plus years designing for aviation, healthcare, and SaaS. Most recently I led UX for enterprise safety platforms at United Airlines, tools used by thousands of employees every day. I work with teams across Europe and North America.

The name comes from gridlines: the invisible structure everything else depends on. You don't notice it until it's missing. Good UX works the same way.

I take on two engagements at a time. Currently booking.

How We Work

Three ways in.

Fixed price · 2–3 weeks

UX audit

I work through your product screen by screen and document what's costing you renewals, ranked by impact. Your engineers can start on the findings the same week.

Fixed scope · 4–10 weeks

Design project

Discovery first, then design, then specs your team can build without me in the room. Scoped and priced before we start. No hourly meters running.

Monthly · limited slots

Embedded partner

I join your Slack and your sprint planning and ship alongside your engineers. For teams that need senior design without a full-time hire.

Questions

Things people ask before hiring one person.

What happens if you're sick or on holiday?

I plan buffers into every fixed-scope engagement and I tell you about holidays before we sign, not after. You always know where the work stands, because the files and the docs live in your workspace, not mine.

Can you work under NDA, in regulated environments?

Yes. Most of my career is aviation and healthcare. I'm used to NDAs, compliance reviews, and security teams. Some of my case studies are gated for exactly this reason.

How do you hand off to our engineers?

Figma files structured the way your codebase is structured, tokens where you use tokens, specs with the edge cases written down. I join standups during build and answer questions the same day. I speak engineer.

Why hire a designer when AI generates UI now?

Use AI. I do. It's very good at producing screens and very bad at knowing which screen is wrong. The expensive mistakes in enterprise software are workflow mistakes, and you find them by talking to the people doing the work.

Do you do branding or marketing sites?

No. I do product UX for complex B2B software. If you need a brand or a marketing site, I'll point you to people who are better at that than I am.
